On the heels of a big victory on Senior Night against Laurel School, the Stow-Munroe Falls field hockey team traveled to Chesterland in hopes of extending their winning streak against the Hawken School Hawks Oct. 6.
In what has become an ongoing theme for Stow, senior forward Sam Houk recorded a hattrick as the Bulldogs defeated the Hawks in overtime 3-2.
Houk powered Stow past Hawken, scoring her third goal of the game with 8:27 remaining in overtime to seal the victory for the Bulldogs.
With the win Stow improved to 7-8 on the season.
The Bulldogs and the Hawks always wage a tough battle against one another and this game was certainly no exception. Efficient play by Stow's backline defenders -- seniors Gabby Kingston, Audra Harris and Maddy Fink, along with sophomore sweeper Kerri Lockard and sophomore goalkeeper Emma Hurguy -- kept the Bulldogs in the tightly contested game.
Senior midfielder Jessica Lloyd had another excellent game patrolling the field and assisted on two of Houk's goals, including the game-winner in overtime.
Sophomore forward Kia Tubergen also recorded an assist in the second half to knot the game at 2-2 during regulation play.
Hurguy was challenged several times in goal and finished the game with five saves for the Bulldogs.
Stow's offense -- led by Houk, senior forward Leanne Bunnell and Sophomore forward Katie Goodenow and Junior midfielder Audrey Grone -- worked along with Tubergen to create Houk's scoring opportunities.
Houk took full advantage of each well-timed pass as she recorded her fifth hat-trick of the season.
The overtime period was fast-and-furious with both teams mounting scoring threats.
During the overtime period the game moves to a 7-versus-7 format and each team operates at breakneck speed. Lloyd broke free and pushed the ball into the scoring zone and found Houk left of goal for the game-winner.
