An injury to a Nordonia goaltender caused a girls soccer game Sept. 7 at Boliantz Stadium between Stow-Munroe Falls and Nordonia to be postponed.
According to Stow coach Nate Rausch, in the early minutes of the junior varsity game, a Stow forward and a Nordonia goaltender were going for a loose ball. During the sequence, the Nordonia goaltender took a knee to her head and went down.
"It was a scary moment to see a goalie go down," Rausch said.
Nordonia athletic director Rob Eckenrode said the Nordonia player was treated by the Knights' training staff and Macedonia EMS. She had to be transported off the field to a local hospital.
Eckenrode said Sept. 8 the player was doing "much better."
"All signs point to positive and speedy recovery," Eckenrode said. "The coaches and the whole team went to the hospital last night to visit here."
Rausch said he and Nordonia coach Les Gicei decided not to resume play in the junior varsity game and postpone the varsity game after the injury. Gicei referred all questions to Eckenrode.
"It scared all the players and it wasn't the right time to play the game," Rausch said. "Sometimes, you have to put soccer aside and this was one of those times."
Eckenrode said the varsity game will be made up Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. at Nordonia's Boliantz Stadium.
Stow will travel to Massillon Perry Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. before hosting Twinsburg Sept. 17
