Walsh Jesuit girls basketball team beats Stow-Munroe Falls

The Walsh Jesuit girls basketball team is heading to the district semifinals.

The fifth-seeded Lady Warriors earned a 68-53 victory over fourth-seeded Stow-Munroe Falls in a Division I sectional title contest Feb. 23 at Ellet High School in Akron.

With the win, Walsh (17-7) earned a date with second-seeded Hudson in a district semifinal game Feb. 28 at 8 p.m. The Lady Explorers (19-5) advanced with a 64-52 win over Nordonia.

The Lady Warriors stormed out to a 10-2 lead before the Lady Bulldogs rallied with a 9-0 run to take an 11-10 advantage after one quarter of play.

Walsh took a 25-16 lead in the second period and eventually took a 43-31 advantage in the third quarter.

Again, Stow (15-8) countered 9-3 run to trim the Lady Warriors' lead to 46-40 at the end of three quarters.

It was all Walsh in the fourth.

The Lady Warriors hit big shots and knocked down their free throws to build their advantage to double digits again.

Walsh's Rachel Keough led all scorers with 24 points and Jessa Gilberton had 14 points. Also scoring in double digits for the Lady Warriors were Lilli Piper (12) and Sophia Simone (10).

Christina Vaughan led the Lady Bulldogs with 16 points and Sam Shaver and Abbie Lawson added 13 and 12 points, respectively.
