Are the right cuts being made?

Receiving a well rounded education is vital in this day and age. With cuts being made in every way possible at some local public school systems, students are finding obstacles they must overcome. Teacher positions are being cut which leads to bigger classroom sizes; activities are all pay to participate which puts a financial burden on families and the possibility of no busing. All of these cuts in fact have an effect on students in the system and the education they receive.
With opportunities being slashed here and there, voters may wonder if the school system is able to provide the well rounded education that students need in these current times. Being a recent graduate from Stow, I understand the importance of being a well rounded individual. I participated in extra-curriculars and excelled in the classroom while at Stow. I feel that the diverse background, of which I came from, helped me get into an excellent college of my choice and has allowed me an advantage over others. With activity fees being so high, families cannot afford the financial burden therefore leaving the students at a disadvantage. Also, class sizes increasing makes for less one on one time which leaves those struggling in the dark. Change in the way schools finance and deciding which things get cut is needed to better our school systems. We as voters should start by asking ourselves, does our superintendent really need a pay raise when the school system is in a financial crunch?

It is my understanding that Dr. Jones donated most of the pay raise to the Stow Scholarship fund. While I bet he could have just cut a check right back to the school coffers - I guess this is the next best thing? Anyway, at the community meetings, the board members say they want to keep cuts out of the classroom. Yet they've made so many cuts that have increased Student/Teacher ratio. I've twice suggested that they reduce the number of elementary principals from 6 to 3. Have each elementary principal split their day between two schools and have whatever teacher whose class is in art or gym at that time sit in the principal's office. That would have no impact to the classroom or student/teacher ratio - yet the suggestion remains unresponded to. Also, the NEOTA union needs to be open to renegotiating their contract before the expiration date. I bet all teachers would rather have a 5% pay cut and remain safe in their jobs than continue to get raises but face the possibility of losing their jobs or end up teaching a class of 35 third graders (for example). But will their union even let them make that concession?

No, our Superintendent does NOT need a pay raise. I am all for supporting the school district, but the Superintendent can not make a compelling case for receiving one (and citing contract language has no merit).
