I was dismayed the other day when, at Bow Wow Beach, I observed a dog prepare to relieve himself in the water. I was appalled when the owner informed me that she wouldn't call him out of the water because he was trained to go in the water. "Lady, it's OK," she said. I was informed that other people do it, and if I want to make an issue out of it, take it up with someone else.
In talking to area veterinarians, I learned that feces in the water grow bacteria that can cause stomach and intestinal disorders, conjunctivitis and worms. Their advice was that if I must take my dog to Bow Wow Beach, make sure that all vaccinations are up to date, including bordetella, check for ticks when we leave the beach and be sure to bathe my dog when we get home.
Aside from medical complications, there is also the "ick" factor. Why would you purposely foul the water? It's disgusting. Silver Springs Lake is not a toilet. It does not get flushed every night.
An official told me that, while they do treat the water and try to keep it up to human standards, the practice of letting dogs do their business in the water is not encouraged.
Lastly, be reminded that as a guest at Bow Wow Beach, you are required to clean up after your dog. So, the next time he goes in the water, I expect to see you wading in after him with your little plastic bag.
No, lady. It is not OK.
