Letter: Wants teachers to take a pay freeze

May 11, 2008

I received my Stow Sentry last Wednesday (April 30), and what is the lead story? The School Board is attempting to put another levy on the fall ballot. Does anyone in the Stow-Munroe Falls School system ever check the results of the last elections? The people keep rejecting the levies. So, how does the school system react? They will keep shoving levies at us until we pass one.

Before the last election, I read letters to the editor every week from members of the school administration, teachers and past and present Boardmembers on how we have to dig deep for our children. But these are hard economic times, and people cannot afford the increase in property taxes. So, the levies fail.

What gets me is that right after the levy defeat, the teachers' contract comes up. Do they dig deep? Heck, no. They threaten to go on strike if they do not get their 3-percent raise. I will vote for a levy when the teachers dig deep for the children and take a pay freeze in their next contract.
