Local students honored

Archbishop Hoban High School has announced its fourth-quarter Academic and Chivalrous Knights.

Junior Taylor Rice of Munroe Falls, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Rice, was named an Academic Knight.

Freshmen Marisa Conti and Michael Younes, both from Stow, were named Chivalrous Knights. Conti is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Conti, and Younes is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Younes.

The Hoban Academic Review Board selects two students each grading period from each grade to be Academic and Chivalrous Knights. Academic Knights excel in scholarship and demonstrate qualities of leadership, service to the Hoban family, service to the community, Christian values and good character.

Chivalrous Knights exhibit industriousness in the classroom, outstanding effort, involvement in student activities, Christian values and have a polite, positive and helpful attitude toward others.

Stow student recognized

Stow-Munroe Falls High School 10th-grader Erica Hannan, 16, was one of 50 Summit County students honored during the April 22 National and Global Youth Service Day Ceremony.

Hannan was honored for her 298 volunteer hours at Akron City Hospital last year. The award ceremony took place in the Akron-Summit County Public Library. She received the Summit County High Point of Ohio Award, the 2008 National and Global Youth Service Day Certificate and the Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition.

Hannan has volunteered on the intensive care unit at the hospital since May 2006.

All-City Orchestra
to perform May 5

The Stow-Munroe Falls School District All-City Orchestra will perform musical selections from the classical era May 5 at 7:30 p.m. The 180-piece orchestra includes students from fifth grade through senior year from Lakeview Intermediate School, Kimpton Middle School and Stow-Munroe Falls High School. The performance will take place at the high school auditorium, 3227 E. Graham Road in Stow.

The event is free and open to the public.

A basket raffle will be sponsored by the Orchestra Parents Association for: senior scholarships; instrument repairs and materials; and an upcoming orchestra trip. Cookbooks also will be offered for a $10 donation.

Lakeview singers to perform at Aeros game

The Lakeview Intermediate School singers will perform May 6 at Canal Park for the Akron Aeros game, which begins at 7 p.m.

The event is open to the public. Presale tickets are available for $5 each by calling Lakeview at 330-689-5250.

Regular-priced tickets are available at the Canal Park box office.

The sixth-grade boys will sing "Heart" from the musical "Damn Yankees" at 6:30 p.m. Both choirs will sing the National Anthem and during the seventh-inning stretch.

The sixth-grade singers are directed by teacher Christine Lemay. Erin Tregoning, the director of the fifth-grade singers, currently is the student teacher of Fran Hamilton.

Kimpton to host orientation May 14

Kimpton Middle School will have an orientation for current sixth-graders and their parents May 14 at 6:30 p.m.

The administration and guidance department will provide a brief overview of what students and parents can expect as incoming seventh-graders this fall.

Information about the "Jump Start" program in August also will be given that night.

The orientation will be followed by Arts & Achievement Night.

Examples of seventh- and eighth-grade student work and various projects will be on display.

Cornerstone to
host TRY-a-thon

Cornerstone Community School's 11th Annual TRY-a-thon is scheduled for May 17. Students will set individual goals for how far they can ride a bike, run or walk and then ask family and friends to pledge a dollar amount in support of their efforts to reach these goals.

The all-day family event will take place rain or shine at Silver Springs Park in Stow. Registration will take place from 8 to 10 a.m. in the Oak Tree Shelter. Families then will bike, run or walk on the Metro Park Trail. The festivities will conclude with an all-school picnic at the shelter.
