Letter to the Editor: 'Disconcerted' by school presentation

May 4, 2008

As a professional scientist (chemist) for 30-plus years who has maintained a strong interest in the earth and atmospheric sciences for more than 40 years, I am disconcerted by the appearance of "Global Warming Messenger" Alvidis Jasin at Kimpton Middle School recently, according to an article in the Stow Sentry (April 27, "'Global Warming Messenger' speaks at Kimpton").

In my opinion, this program, which only portrays one side of the global warming debate, smacks of propaganda.

An ever-increasing number of climate scientists and other professionals are coming forth with studies and data disputing the premises that are being pushed by Al Gore and his people. Scientists like Roy Spencer (former senior scientist for NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center), Dr. Richard Lindzen of MIT, Dr. John Christy (director, Earth System Space Center, University of Alabama -- Huntsville) and others have voiced strong opinions against man-made global warming and have shown the data to back it up. Others have pointed out in great detail what are seen as falsehoods in Mr. Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" video.

It would have been more appropriate for Kimpton Middle School to balance the presentation with someone who could have given the other side of the debate, which is nowhere near over with. A showing of the video "The Great Global Warming Swindle" would have also been appropriate.
