Stow -- Cardboard boxes became hamster hotels and guitars. Milk jugs became bird feeders and games, while old jars were transformed into banks and vases. A Social Studies project on recycling brought the creative talents out in Holy Family's third-grade students.
Students were given the task of making a new product using reused materials. The only non-recycled items allowed were paint, glue and tape.
They also were required to create an advertisement or infomercial to "sell" the product. They then tested their sales skills during in-class demonstrations of their creations.
"The children truly exceeded our expectations," said third-grade teacher Ann Malecky. "Not only did they come up with some very clever products, they also were very creative in their presentations. While the project ran the gamut -- from the very simple to the more elaborate. They all captured the lessons being taught."
