Stow residents honored
Walsh Jesuit High School seniors Maria Petrasko and Maria Conti, who have attended school together since preschool, both were surprised Feb. 25 by college admissions officers who came to Walsh Jesuit to present them with full college scholarships.
Petrasko, who intends to major in chemistry at Wheeling Jesuit University, was awarded a prestigious Laut scholarship, which is given annually to only two students who plan to enter the school's Honors Program. She earned the award by besting more than 900 other applicants in a series of written and oral competitions.
Wheeling Jesuit's dean of enrollment, Denny Bardos, presented Petrasko with a ceremonial check for $100,000 -- enough to cover four years of tuition. The presentation was made on her 18th birthday. Petrasko is the daughter of Maureen and Anthony Petrasko of Stow and attended Holy Family School.
Conti, who intends to major in English, also was presented with a full scholarship. She was the recipient of a Presidential Scholarship from Walsh University and one of six winners from a pool of 125 applicants. The scholarship includes admission to the university's Honors Program, an education valued at more than $80,000.
Conti was presented with the scholarship by Brett Freshour, Walsh University's vice president for enrollment management. She is the daughter of Joanne and David Conti of Stow and attended Holy Family School.
