Fitness center to sponsor diabetes fundraiser in April

February 24, 2008

Throughout Summit County from April 4 to 6, the community can help raise money for the Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland by attending the Swim For Diabetes, sponsored by Verizon Wireless.

The event will take place April 5 at 2 p.m. at LifeCenter Plus, 5133 Darrow Road in Hudson. For its fundraising efforts, LifeCenter Plus will attempt to set a world record for most people simultaneously taking a water aerobics class. The record is 247, and LifeCenter Plus hopes to attract at least 300 participants.

Participants must arrive by 1:30 p.m. The minimum donation to participate is $5 per person. Those who raise $60 or more will receive a T-shirt. Those who raise $100 are eligible for a free ticket to a Cleveland Indians game, and those who raise $200 or more can parade the field before the game.

The goal of the event is to raise $9,000 for the Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland.

A Swim for Diabetes open swim will be at LifeCenter Plus April 4 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Individuals of all ages can participate by swimming lengths, doing water aerobics or walking in the water, and making a donation or raising pledges.

For more information, call LifeCenter Plus aquatics director Jim Clark at 330-655-2377 ext. 125.

The fundraising swim at the Twinsburg Fitness Center will be April 6 from 9 a.m. to noon. Individuals of all ages and abilities are invited to swim, walk or splash through the pool to raise money for diabetes and a cure, as well as compete for prizes.

The top money earner out of the 75 pool locations in the county will win a trip for two to Goodyear, Ariz., site of the 2009 Cleveland Indians training camp, as well as throw out the first pitch at Swim For Diabetes night at Progressive Field on May 10.
