Letter to the Editor: Hopes program will 'empower' students

I'd like to take a moment to thank all responsible for having the foresight to bring Rachel's Challenge to our school district. The principals at Lakeview, Kimpton and the high school, in cooperation with the Kimpton PTA president, Angie Thomas, helped fund this program for our students.

I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the program last week at the high school. You could hear a pin drop for an entire hour that kept our children captivated. It was the most powerful and moving presentation I've ever seen on the importance of acts of kindness and the devastation caused by bullying.

As much as we don't want to admit it, there are children who mercilessly torture others because of their inadequacies or simply because they are different. My hope is that this program will live on in them for many years and will empower them to have the courage to diffuse the bullying of their peers when they are faced with it.

This is so long overdue in our community and I applaud the difficult decision of facing this challenge head on and believe it will make a difference in many lives and with any luck, will hopefully prevent any more tragic losses of our precious children. I personally am committed to taking on Rachel's Challenge and if you have a student in our schools, you should ask them if they have the courage to take it on, too.
