Marcus Fruth, 49, of Stow, was found guilty March 8 of charges related to an arson at his Norton Road home. According to Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh, a jury found Fruth guilty of felony complicity to aggravated arson and four felony counts of insurance fraud in Judge Brenda Burnham-Unruh's Common Pleas courtroom. Fruth will be sentenced on April 29 by visiting Judge Judy Cross. Fruth was arrested in August 2009 after an investigation by the Stow Police and Fire departments of a September 2008 fire at his home and garage at 1290 Norton Road. According to the prosecutor, upon arrival the Stow Fire Department suspected arson, as the scene reeked of gasoline and had two points of origin. The garage contents, three cars valued at $65,000 and the structure were destroyed in the blaze. According to police reports, a separate fire damaged the house and basement, originally built in 1908, and the total loss was estimated at more than $500,000. According to the prosecutor, co-defendant Edward Layton, 39, of Akron, came to the Stow Police Department and confessed to setting the fire. Layton pleaded guilty in August 2009. His sentencing date has not yet been determined. Marcus Fruth and his wife Jackie co-owned Fruth Sanitation in Stow for more than 25 years. In June 2008, Waste Management of Ohio took over Fruth Sanitation's curbside recycling and waste service routes. Comments
