by Steve Batko Correspondent It took a tip-in hoop with 2.6 seconds left for Northeast Ohio Conference River Division champion Brush to defeat visiting Stow 59-57 on Feb. 19. Sophomore forward Pharaoh Brown, who had been plagued with knee problems, tipped in a missed shot with 2.6 seconds left to best the Bulldogs in Lyndhurst. The 6-foot-3 Brown finished with 18 points and eight rebounds, including six offensive boards as the smaller Arcs showed their leaping ability. Although head coach Dave Close liked the gameís tempo against the athletic Arcs, Stow had trouble stopping Brown on the glass and 6-1 all-star senior point guard Nate Tait, who poured in 24 points for the Arcs (13-5, 6-2). It spoiled a solid game for Stow (12-7, 5-4) as sophomore point guard David Walker had a driving lay up to tie the game 57-57 in the waning seconds. After Walkerís bucket, the Arcs looked for a final shot, and missed on a 3-pointer, and then missed another shot. That's when Brown somehow got his hand up and got the ball in the cylinder. In the first narrow loss to Brush earlier this season, Stow made the Arcs pull out a win with a 17-9 fourth stanza. Brush and Twinsburg tied at 6-2 in the NOC River. Stow, which wrapped up the regular season Feb. 26 at Solon, overcame a rough start and did it in fashion. The Bulldogs featured a 27-14 spurt in the first half as Stow held its largest lead (27-22) before the half when Walker fed senior guard Blake Williams for a triple. Williams scored 15 for Stow while sophomore guard Kyle Scelza scored 12. Both canned three treys. It was a back and forth contest and Stow even led 52-49 with 2:45 left, but then Brush fired back. A few Bulldog turnovers proved costly down the stretch. E-mail: stowsports@recordpub.com Phone: 330-688-0088 ext. 3113 Comments
