World War II Army nurse

Rosy "Fritzie" E. Berkey, 87, of Munroe Falls and formerly of Friedens, Pa., died Jan. 26, 2010, at Traditions Nursing Home, Cuyahoga Falls.

She was born Sept. 28, 1922, in Stonycreek Twp., the daughter of Earl and Mable (Hunter) Fritz. A graduate of Shanksville Stonycreek High School and Windber Hospital Nursing School, she was a World War II Army nurse, a former nurse at Somerset Hospital and Somerset State Hospital. She owned and operated Berkey's Camp Hartley in Bedford along with her husband.

She was also a member of Friedens Lutheran Church, and Somerset County Nurses Association.

She was preceded in death by parents, her husband Alfred and brother Ray Will.

She is survived by sons James (Sharon) of Somerset, Pa. and Douglas (Deborah) of Munroe Falls; grandchildren: Anthony, Chad, Bradley (Melissa), Jessica and Sarah Berkey; great- grandchildren Mason and Addison Berkey; and sister Linetta Hamer of Friedens, Pa.

Visitation, funeral and burial took place in Pennsylvania. Contributions may be given to Friedens Lutheran Church Community Ministry Fund, 131 S. Main St., Friedens, Pa. 15541, or Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service, 3358 Ridgewood Road, Akron 44333. Redmon Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
