Letter to the Editor: Questions need for rental property 'tax'

"We the People" work hard for our families, try to save for our children and labor not to spend more than we make. The federal government has saddled our children with horrendous debt and seems to be daily making laws to take away freedoms.

Now it appears the city of Stow has decided to "tax" rental real estate owners. Actually, as the building inspector stated, this will be a new cost for the tenants, which we're sure will not thrill them. Many people are out of work now, vacancies in rental properties are high and now the city proposed what we see as more "taxes," or fees. It's $40 this year -- what will it be the next and the next?

If it is not about money, why would the city be charging all rental property owners a "tax" and possible severe penalties? Since the city is laying off employees, could it also be for someone to insure they keep their job?

What about empty properties -- will they be "taxed" also? Our Founding Fathers warned of the dangers of excessive taxation. One must labor nearly six months of the year to pay taxes at all as levels as the country groans beneath the cruel burden.

If a tenant is wise, they will sign a lease; if that lease is broken by either party, the offended party has the right and ability to go to small claims court. That would be taking advantage of the court we have here in Stow, which has cost the taxpayers plenty and doesn't appear to have been a wise decision. It appears the city is trying to make another unwise decision which will cost residents. It would be interesting to know where this idea originated from. This proposed bill would allow the city inspector to come inside the premises. Frankly we will not submit to that kind of abuse power (unreasonable searches).

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Mumper
