It did my heart good to see several recent letters in the Stow Sentry offering opinions contrary to what one normally finds in the media these days. I was also interested in an opposing letter ("Unhappy with paper publishing letter 'filled with hate speech,'" Stow Sentry, Jan. 3, 2010). Rather than resort to a logical debate of the issues at hand, the author offered the emotional, shop-worn complaints that the one letter had nothing but "hate speech" and "racism." Might I remind that writer that the First Amendment to the Constitution, "Freedom of Speech," is still in force, although the state seems bent on changing that. I reread the letter in question, and I saw no hate speech or racism. Every time a citizen disagrees with President Obama on any issue, is it just because he's our first black president? And where is the hate speech? Go back to the myriad attacks on President George W. Bush during his eight-year presidency. I saw countless displays of hate speech there. Lastly, does the letter writer in question promote censorship? For the sake of our liberties, I hope not. However, I applaud the Stow Sentry for publishing such differences of opinion. The newspaper should be the forum for a large range of different thought and commentary. Such is part of the foundation on which this country was built. James J. Bjaloncik Stow Comments
