Local Chamber of Commerce endorses State Issue 2

Stow-Munroe Falls Chamber of Commerce is endorsing State Issue 2. The measure, if passed Nov. 3, will create a 13-member Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board (the Board) of experts in animal care, food safety and farming.

Longtime Stow resident and farmer, Charlie Call, a strong supporter of the Stow-Munroe Falls Chamber of Commerce and 75-year supporter of the Darrow Street Grange, says it is important to pass Issue 2. "It keeps local control of animal and farmer welfare at the local level in Ohio as opposed to being dictated to by a national organization headquartered in Washington, D.C. who has little or no interest in animal welfare."

The Board will be made up of 13 Ohioans, including: Three family farmers; two veterinarians (one being the state veterinarian); a food safety expert; a representative of a local humane society; two members from statewide farm organizations; the dean of an Ohio agriculture college; and two members representing Ohio consumers.

Twelve members will be appointed to the Board, including 10 by the governor and one each by the House and Senate. The director of Ohio's department of agriculture will serve as the 13th member and as chair of the Board.

According to the Chamber, the Stow-Munroe Falls Board of Directors resolved to support State Issue 2 to create the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board "because it will: Maintain the viability of Ohio's agriculture economy; leverage the best available Ohio animal care and food safety expertise in our state; enhance consumer confidence in Ohio-raised food; ensure that decisions about Ohio farming and food are made by Ohio experts; protect the safety of Ohio's food supply; and sustain Ohio's family livestock and poultry farms for generations to come."
