by Jeff Wheeler Reporter Munroe Falls -- If there's something strange in your neighborhood, who you gonna call? Eric Haney of the Munroe Falls Paranormal Society, or MFPS for short, hopes you call him. "We're not the 'Ghostbusters," said Haney, age 46. Haney has been an paranormal investigator for 20 years and also works as an electronics engineer and systems programer as well as being the founder and lead investigator for the MFPS. Around 2005, Haney said, is when he finally put together his own group of paranormal investigators. His team of nine investigators ranging from historians to psychics are called upon to investigate things people think might be paranormal occurrences. Recently the MFPS has made a deal with a local TV production company to film six episodes of an original TV show about paranormal investigation. The series which should be called "Mysterious Midwest" will feature the team going to various haunted locations throughout the Midwest. Such locations include Gettysburg Pa., Villisca Ax Murder House in Iowa, several historic places in Cleveland which were to remain nameless because the deals were not finalized and Bobby Mackey's a haunted honky tonk bar in Wilder, Ky., which the team was currently heading to film episode number 2. "We approach every case with extreme skepticism," says Haney "We come into the situation believing there is a reasonable explanation. It's only after we have exhausted every other possible option that we resort to deeming something paranormal." Haney expressed how upholding the MFPS integrity is extremely important to the team, thus keeping their credibility and validity in the paranormal field. "Some groups go into the situation with the preconceived notion that there is a paranormal happening." With the notion that there is a paranormal happening, the group would have the data fit their conclusion instead of letting their conclusion fit their data. That doesn't mean however that they haven't had a few very paranormal experiences. In one case in Massillon, it was said that while investigating a house, cups were thrown across the room, a flashlight was ripped out of Haney's hand, as well as a shadowy figure fell from the ceiling of the cellar, crashing into a tool cart and frightening some of the team. "It was one of the top investigation I've had," said Haney. Haney added that some of this investigation was captured on video and is posted on their Web site. Haney explained why he has had such a passion for paranormal investigation. "Before I was with the team I had encounters where I came face to face with a shadow figure for about 10 seconds before it vanished." Haney said this was a real driving force for him. "I wanted to be able to explain this type of energy." The MFPS offers several different services that are linked with paranormal studies which include haunting investigations, witchcraft, psychic related events and more. The team has about a five-hour driving range they are willing to travel in order to investigate; farther than that they will contact one of their affiliates to handle the investigation but still manage the case. "The most common case we receive are from residential homeowners that claim to hear footsteps, noises, voices, or see shadow figures." So what is the cost of the MFPS services? Absolutely nothing. The group feels that having the opportunity to document these events is payment enough. Currently the MFPS is looking to receive some types of grants to fund their organization but also fund their organization through donations and out-of-pocket means. They also help the clients after their investigations. "We are a full service group," explains Haney. "We won't just say you do or don't have a paranormal activity. We offer counseling if needed, will do whatever we can to rid the activity, and make sure they ready to return to their home or office. In times like these the clients really have no one to turn to. They can't call the police or go to a doctor. We really are the only people they can turn to." Clients' personal information can be kept confidential if requested, but the group will share data and readings with other paranormal investigation groups, omitting personal information.
