MAXINE UNK

Volunteer at St. Thomas Hospital

Maxine Unk, 85, died on June 1, 2009.

Born and raised in Kenmore, she was a graduate of Kenmore High and Hammel Business College. She worked briefly at Colonial Salt Co., was a volunteer at St. Thomas Hospital and devoted her life to being a caregiver and homemaker.

She loved fresh flowers throughout the house and her deck was brimming with geraniums, daisies, impatiens -- any plant that added color and life. She enjoyed the theater, movies, golfing and wherever she lived - Chicago, Pittsburgh, Alexandria - she quickly became involved in sports and community affairs, as well as supporting her husband's United Way and social work career.

Preceded in death by her parents Floyd and Theresa Freed, sister Pauline (G.T. Gale), brother Harold (Pauline) Freed and brothers-in-law Steve and James Unk, she leaves Raymond, her husband of 64 years; son Dan (Lois) and daughter Judy (Grant) Joyce; grandchildren Lisa (Brian) Smole and Brian (Lizzie) Unk, Janay and Molly Joyce; great-grandchildren Quinton, Danny, Isabelle and Jonathon; sister-in-law Jerry Jones; special nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.

Visitation was at Redmon Funeral Home with Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at Holy Family Catholic Church. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 1815 W. Market St., Suite 301, Akron 44313 or Greenleaf Family Center, 212 E. Exchange St., Akron 44304. Mrs. Unk's video tribute is available at www.redmonfuneralhome.com.
