by Steve Batko Correspondent As regional track and field meets go, the Austintown Fitch division I regional is always one of the finest in Ohio. That didn't change as the Stow boys track squad had a host of entries at the May 27 to 29 Fitch regional meet. Mike Drozin's team was left without a state qualifier as the top four finishers at Fitch advanced to the State Championships at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at Ohio State University at June 5 and 6. Likely the most disappointing was the Bulldogs' 3,200-meter relay, which was 10th overall at regionals. After posting a near school record of 8:00.18 in winning the districts, the relay was clocked at 8:12.53 at regional. The relay included junior Nick Brenner, sophomore Greg Oneacre, senior Phil Ruolo, and senior Kyle Quinn. Junior Travis Charboneau ran in the district 3,200 relay. Sophomore Duane Mitchell qualified for regionals in four different events. Mitchell finished 10th overall in the long jump (20-5.75 feet) and competed in the high jump as well as the team's 400 and 800-meter relays. The 400 and 800 relays each placed 15th overall. The 400 cast (45.19) included senior Mike Jefferson, Mitchell, senior Brian Recktenwald, and senior Rick Bailey. Making up the 800-meter relay was Jefferson, Mitchell, senior Chris Dunphy and freshman Bryan Beltz. Their time was 1:32.57. E-mail: stowsports@recordpub.com Phone: 330-688-0088 ext. 3113 Comments
