by Mike Lesko Associate Editor Stow -- After astronomy enthusiast Dave Jessie launched a Web site about a year ago, its popularity continues to amaze him. "The Web page has been visited by people in 37 countries, 45 of the 50 states and about 75 cities in Ohio," the Stow resident said. To locate it, go to the city of Stow Web site at: Stow.oh.us, then click on departments/ parks and recreation/ astronomy programs. It provides general information about Jessie's Wonders of the Night Sky astronomy program, which takes place on most Friday nights between early spring and late fall behind Fishcreek Elementary School, 5080 Fishcreek Road in Stow. The next one is scheduled for Oct. 10. Occasionally, the events are conducted elsewhere. Locations will be listed on the Web site. "We have a wonderful time," he said. "And sometimes we accidentally learn some things." The Web site includes a schedule of the programs on a background that shows a star-lit sky. It includes listings of common names for deep sky objects, current and predicted weather for Stow, and Jessie's favorite astro-related Web sites. Some questions and answers from the Web site: "What's the deal? Do I have to register? What time should I plan to be there?" * No registration required. * Come and go at your complete leisure. * We usually start setting up equipment about an hour before sunset. * If you can only stop for a brief visit, do so. * If you can't get here until very late, stop in and take a look with us night owls. "How should I dress?" * Dress warmer than you think you need to. * It feels really cold at night, even if it's warm in the daytime. * Long pants and a jacket (or two!) are recommended regardless of daytime temperatures. "What should I bring with me?" * Telescopes and/or binoculars (if you have them), but this is most definitely not required. * Lawn chairs, blankets, hot drinks and any other material comforts you can think of. * Enthusiasm! You won't be disappointed. * Anyone who might like to join you! "Will the events occur if the weather is bad?" * No. Unfortunately, our telescopes can't see through clouds. Rain, lightning and telescopes do not get along well together. "OK, I'm interested in attending, but how will I know if the weather is bad where the observing will occur?" * Easy! Just click on the status links of the event in question. * If cancellation is necessary due to weather conditions, the status page will be updated to inform you. Jessie takes satisfaction in the Web site, saying, "We'd love people to look at it, and come out and experience the universe for themselves." Or, as the Web site reads: "Come out with us. The universe is waiting." E-mail: mlesko@recordpub.com Phone: 330-688-0088 ext. 3117 Comments
