by Steve Wiandt Reporter Cuyahoga Falls -- City Council is remembering two local servicemen and backing a state bill to name a stretch of highway after them. Council May 12 unanimously approved a resolution to recognize the sacrifices made by Sgt. Justin T. Walsh and Sgt. Bryan W. Large, both killed in the War On Terror in Iraq, and to urge the enactment of Senate Bill 327 by the Ohio General Assembly. Councilmember Carol Klinger (R-at large) presented the resolution to Council; each member of Council will share its sponsorship. The bill was passed unanimously 32-0 by the Ohio Senate May 14 and will move on to the House of Representatives. Proposed by Sen. Kevin Coughlin (R-Cuyahoga Falls), S.B. 327 calls for the designation of the northbound portion of Route 59 between Broad Boulevard and Howe Avenue as Sgt. Bryan W. Large Memorial Highway, and the designation of the southbound side of the same portion of Route 59 as Sgt. Justin T. Walsh Memorial Highway. Each stretch of highway is about a mile. "It's important that we honor our fallen soldiers," Coughlin said. "It's important not only to honor their service but to remind the generations to come that we too can be called to defend the cause of freedom." Coughlin said he is pleased by the bill's unanimous support by the Senate and urges its passage in the House. He noted 22 co-sponsors joined him on the bill. Sgt. Walsh, 24, a January 2001 graduate of Falls High, died Oct. 11, 2006, from wounds he received while serving with the U.S. Marine Corps in Iraq. He was a member of the 8th Engineer Support Battalion. Army Sgt. Large, 31, served as the lead medic of the 3rd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division, based at Fort Bragg, N.C. He was killed in action Oct. 3, 2005, in Al Haqlaniyah, Iraq when an improvised explosive device struck his vehicle during his third tour of duty. Large was born in Cuyahoga Falls and graduated in 1992 from Cuyahoga Falls High School. E-mail: swiandt@recordpub.com Phone: 330-688-0088 ext. 3141 Comments
