Bob Bard, president of the Summit County Beekeepers Association, will speak to the Hudson Garden Club and 2008 scholarship recipients and their parents about the importance of honey bees May 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Laurel Lake Community Room. Bard will discuss pollinators found in gardens, such as bumble bees, blue orchid bees and carpenter bees. Bees pollinate about one-sixth of the world's flowering plant species and about 400 agricultural plants. Many area homeowners set up beehives on their property, and the club will learn more about the boxes and how they are maintained. Bard will discuss color and bloom time of plants grown in the garden and how they attract and benefit the bees. Bard teaches classes on beekeeping and attends fairs, festivals and other events to spread his knowledge of bees and beekeeping. A reception for the 2008 scholarship recipients will begin at 7 p.m. The club will provide beverages and cake. For more information, call Mary Gallo at 330-315-3928. Comments
