I am responding to the April 23 letter to the editor "Wants to celebrate Earth in own way." I am stunned by the author's assertion that beliefs in global warming are "fantastic tales"; the writer ascribed the weight of these environmental "superstitions" to Al Gore. Though Gore is simply a (Nobel Peace Prize-winning) spokesperson, an ever-broader informed consensus about the connection between human activities and global warming resounds, and beliefs that global warming is a hoax (like our ice caps) are melting away. Heck, President Bush -- a longtime cynic -- announced only weeks ago that he wants Congress to pass a bill to combat global warming. The letter writer is correct that we have a right to our beliefs. However, I would prefer if the debate would focus on what steps to take to combat this real problem; rather than arguing against the overwhelming evidence of the existence of climate change.
