Stow -- The National Honor Society of High School Scholars announced that Maggie Hightower, a sophomore at Stow-Munroe Falls High School, has been selected for membership.

The National Honor Society recognizes top scholars and invites only those students who have achieved superior academic excellence.

The announcement was made by NSHSS Founder and Chairman Claes Nobel, a senior member of the family that established the Nobel Prizes.

"On behalf of NSHSS, I am honored to recognize the hard work, sacrifice and commitment that Maggie Hightower has demonstrated to achieve this exceptional level of academic excellence," Nobel said. "Maggie Hightower is now a member of a unique community of scholars -- a community that represents our very best hope for the future."

Added NSHSS President James Lewis, "We aim to help students like Maggie Hightower build on their academic successes and enhance the skills and desires to have a positive impact on the global community."

Membership in NSHSS entitles qualified students to benefits that include scholarship opportunities, academic competitions, free events, member-only resources, publications, participation in programs offered by educational partners, online forums, personalized recognition items and publicity honors.

In addition to NSHSS membership, Hightower, who has a 4.0 grade-point average, received the 2007 Principal's Award.

She is an active member of Student Council and was named Outstanding Freshman Council member for the 2007-08 school year.

A previous staff member of the Stoanno Yearbook, she received the Award of Excellence, Editors Only in 2006.

Hightower is a previous student ambassador for Australia.

She is planning to attend Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., where she would major in International Business and minor in Australian Studies.
