American Celebration Concert set for May 3

The Stow-Munroe Falls High School Wind Ensemble will perform its annual American Celebration Concert May 3 in the high school auditorium beginning at 7 p.m.

The concert, which is free to the public, will pay honor to America through both instrumental and vocal selections.

As a slight departure, this year's concert will feature music from American movies.

"America has a rich tradition of movies which have informed, entertained and inspired theater-goers," said band director Brian Monroe. "Keeping our nation's heritage in mind, we sought out music which has become part of the American life."

The concert will begin with music from the "Golden Age of Theater" and titles such as "That's Entertainment," "Blue Moon" and "Singin' in the Rain." "Star-Spangled Spectacular," a medley featuring the music of Broadway legend George M. Cohan will include "Mary's A Grand Old Name," "Give My Regards to Broadway" and "Yankee Doodle Dandy." Senior Meredith Schueneman will perform a vocal rendition of "Blue Moon."

The concert will continue with music from westerns, including the "Magnificent Seven." From the western frontier, the concert will move into space, with music from Ron Howard's film "Apollo 13."

Honoring local service men and women, both veterans and those on active duty, has always been part of the American Celebration Concert. Themes from war movies -- including "Patton," "Schindler's List" and "The Patriot" -- will be featured. The Wind Ensemble will pay tribute to all those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice as they perform John Williams' "Hymn to the Fallen" from "Saving Private Ryan."

Celebrating both the band's performance at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom and Disney contributions to movies, the band will perform some of the new classics including music from "Mary Poppins," "Little Mermaid," "Aladdin" and "Beauty and the Beast." The music of composer John Williams will be heard in a medley, including music from "Hook," "Harry Potter," "ET" and "Indiana Jones."

The concert will conclude with the traditional salute to active military and veterans.

"The concert should be appealing to both kids and adults," said Monroe. "We would like to fill our auditorium. We hope you can join us."

Lakeview singers to perform at Aeros game

The Lakeview Intermediate School singers will perform May 6 at Canal Park for the Akron Aeros game, which begins at 7 p.m.

The event is open to the public. Presale tickets are available for $5 each by calling Lakeview at 330-689-5250. Regular-priced tickets are available at the Canal Park box office.

The sixth-grade boys will sing "Heart" from the musical "Damn Yankees" at 6:30 p.m. Both choirs will sing the National Anthem and during the seventh-inning stretch.

The sixth-grade singers are directed by teacher Christine Lemay. Erin Tregoning, the director of the fifth-grade singers, currently is the student teacher of Fran Hamilton.

Kimpton to host orientation May 14

Kimpton Middle School will have an orientation for current sixth-graders and their parents May 14 at 6:30 p.m.

The administration and guidance department will provide a brief overview of what students and parents can expect as incoming seventh-graders this fall.

Information about the "Jump Start" program in August also will be given that night. The orientation will be followed by Arts & Achievement Night.

Examples of seventh- and eighth-grade student work and various projects will be on display.
