Three churches will combine choirs for a special "Celebrate Wesleyan Heritage" concert May 4 at 2 p.m. at the Church of the Master, 800 E. Market Street in Akron. The Church of the Master choir will be joined by the Chancel Choir of Akron First United Methodist Church and the adult choir of the Stow United Methodist Church. Ellen Ditrick, music director at the Church of the Master, will direct. Soloists from each of the three choirs will perform. The concert will feature music by Samuel Sebastian Wesley, a 19th Century composer. Wesley was the grandson of Charles Wesley, a hymn writer who, along with his brother John Wesley, co-founded the Methodist and Wesleyan Churches. Anthems performed by the 50-voice choir will include: "Blessed Be The God and Father," an Easter choral piece composed in 1834; "O Give Thanks," an anthem drawn from Psalms 86 and 106; "Ascribe Unto The Lord," the most musically complex of the six anthems; "Wash Me, Throughly," a contemplative piece, "Solomon's Prayer"; and "Lead Me Lord," the most well-known of the works by Wesley. For more information, call Ellen Ditrick at 330-678-0121. Comments
