Four local students
Four Stow-Munroe Falls High School students were among the 300 students selected statewide for the Governor's Youth Art Exhibition. Caitlin Elmore (painting), Billy Graves (photography), Spencer House (photography) and Meredith Schueneman (painting) received recognition during an awards ceremony April 13 in Columbus. "We are very proud that our four students are represented among the very best works in the state," said art teacher Robert Putka. The sponsoring teachers were Putka and photography teacher Steve Pierce. The top 300 artworks are selected by state jurors from approximately 2,500 pieces representing 15 regions in the state. The Governor's Youth Art Exhibition at the James A. Rhodes State Office Tower ends May 16. The Ohio Governor's Youth Art Exhibition, now in its 38th year, is dedicated to the educational and artistic advancement of talented young people in the state of Ohio. The purpose is to provide young artists of the state with opportunities to advance their talent. Regional winners from Stow-Munroe Falls High School are: Chris Barnes, Katie Byrne, Paul LaManna, Stephanie Doty, Brittany Hill, Kira Ivanov, Heather Jarvis, Rebecca Kidwell, Tim Long, Christian Morgan, Lee Scott, Ken Sugiura, Dan Thorson, David Wang. The Stow-Munroe Falls School District special education parent mentors invite families of students receiving special education services to an evening of information on the IEP (Individualized Education Program). Karen Majeski, the director of State Support Team Region 8 (formerly known as SERRC) will guide families through the IEP process beginning with the Multifactored Evaluation and continuing with the content of the IEP and the parent's role as a valued team member. The session will take place April 29 at Indian Trail Elementary School, 3512 Kent Road in Stow, in the gymnasium. Pizza and refreshments will be served from 6 to 6:30 p.m. The presentation will start at 6:30 and conclude at 8 p.m., followed by questions and answers. RSVP to the parent mentor office by April 28. Nominations sought for county teaching team Nominations are being accepted for the Summit County All-County Teaching Team. Anyone can nominate an educator currently teaching in Summit County in the kindergarten through the 12th grade. The team will compromise one teacher from each of the Summit County School districts, two teachers from Summit County parochial schools and one from Summit County private schools. Each person receiving this honor will be recognized at an Education Celebration Oct. 13 at The University of Akron Student Union Conference Center. One teacher will be chosen as the recipient of the 2008 Teacher of the Year Award to be announced at the banquet. Nomination forms are available at the Summit County Educational Service Center at 420 Washington Ave. in Cuyahoga Falls. The deadline for all nominations is April 30 at 5 p.m. For more information on nominating or further details on the event, call 330-484-6622. Lakeview singers to perform at Aeros game The Lakeview Intermediate School singers will perform May 6 at Canal Park for the Akron Aeros game, which begins at 7 p.m. The event is open to the public. Presale tickets are available for $5 each by calling Lakeview at 330-689-5250. Regular-priced tickets are available at the Canal Park box office. The sixth-grade boys will sing "Heart" from the musical "Damn Yankees" at 6:30 p.m. Both choirs will sing the National Anthem and during the seventh-inning stretch. The sixth-grade singers are directed by teacher Christine Lemay. Erin Tregoning, the director of the fifth-grade singers, currently is the student teacher of Fran Hamilton. Kimpton to host orientation May 14 Kimpton Middle School will have an orientation for current sixth-graders and their parents May 14 at 6:30 p.m. The administration and guidance department will provide a brief overview of what students and parents can expect as incoming seventh-graders this fall. Information about the "Jump Start" program in August also will be given that night. The orientation will be followed by Arts & Achievement Night. Examples of seventh- and eighth-grade student work and various projects will be on display. Comments
