Munroe Falls -- Police are investigating the theft of approximately 1,200 feet of copper wire from alongside train tracks that run through the city. The missing wire has not impeded the functioning of the track, according to the reports. Copper wire conducts electric currents along the track used for a number of purposes, such as signaling the train of an upcoming crossing, said Stu Nicholson, public information officer for the Ohio Rail Development Commission. The value of the wire was not reported. Police received a report March 21 at 11:27 a.m. that a suspicious man was seen in the vicinity of the CSX railroad tracks north of the intersection of South River Road and Munroe Falls Avenue. When police arrived, they observed approximately 900 feet of copper wire was missing from the railroad track, according to the report. Bootprints and grooves in the snow showed where wire apparently had been dragged, according to the report. The report was received from a lineman employed by the city of Cuyahoga Falls, who said he saw the person as he drove by. The lineman told police he observed the suspect standing next to a truck that held the wire, according to the report. On March 23, a Munroe Falls Police officer reported he received a separate report of two people near the railroad tracks March 21 at approximately 9:30 a.m. Police reported observing approximately 300 feet of wire missing further to the west along the track, heading toward Tallmadge. The vehicle the second witnesses described matched that of the vehicle in the report police received two hours earlier, according to the 9:30 a.m. report The same tool apparently was used in both incidents to pull the copper wire down so it could be reached to cut it from its location, according to police. Police notified Florida-based CSX Transportation, and notified the Tallmadge Police Department that the missing wire was along track headed toward Tallmadge. Arrest made
