Free small business seminar planned

The Ohio Small Business Development Center at the Summit Medina Business Alliance is offering a "Business Basics" Workshop April 2 for individuals interested in starting their own business or those who recently started a business operation.

"Business Basics" provides participants the fundamentals of getting started whether they are planning a commercial lease or a home-based location.

The program addresses the planning process, initial financial projections, ownership options, review of the required forms, as well as loan options and additional funding availability. Participants will receive the business plan outline during the session.

The licensing sources and general application forms provided through the Ohio Business Gateway at www.Ohio.gov will be discussed, and participants are asked to review the Web page information prior to attending.

The workshop will take place April 2 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. The session is provided at no cost and offers an open forum for questions and answers throughout the meeting.

April 11 event features futurist, Cavs official

Futurist Ed Barlow and Cleveland Cavaliers president Len Komoroski will be the featured speakers at Summit Workforce Solutions' Economic & Workforce Development Forum & Luncheon April 11 at The Job Center, 1040 E. Tallmadge Avenue in Akron.

Barlow, president of Creating the Future Inc., will lead the morning session: "Preparing Summit County for a 21st Century Economy: Strategies for Wealth Creation."

"The impact of globalization, new science and technology, and changing demographics upon future prosperity are significant," said Barlow. "This must be understood and addressed at the local level."

Participants in the community forum will learn about the structural changes that are occurring and their "wealth creation" implications for individuals, organizations and communities; the unique, yet interconnected responsibilities which business, government, education, health care and nonprofit organizations must realize; and ways to better anticipate and prepare for what is ahead.

The morning session will begin with registration and a continental breakfast at 7:30 a.m., followed by the community forum from 8 to 11:30 a.m.

"Creating a Winning Culture" is the title of Komoroski's luncheon keynote address.

Komoroski became president of the Cleveland Cavaliers in April 2003 after seven years as senior vice president and chief of operations for the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles. He played a major role in the start-up of the Minnesota Timberwolves from 1988-94. From there, he arrived in Cleveland as the senior vice president and chief operating officer of the International Hockey League's Cleveland Lumberjacks, transforming the team into a thriving business. Komoroski oversaw the 2003-04 restructuring of the Cavaliers as an enterprise.

Doors open at 11:30 a.m. The luncheon begins at noon.

Employment program set for April 23 at KSU

Hattie Larlham Research Institute will present "Employment Through Social Capital" April 23 with Dr. Al Condeluci of Pittsburgh as guest lecturer. The event will take place at Kent State University's OhioWhite Hall from 9 a.m. to noon.

The event is part of a new series of seminars provided by the HattieLarlham, providing an opportunity for professionals to network and get some real solutions and answers to today's challenges for people with disabilities.

Following his lecture, Dr. Condeluci will join a panel discussion entitled "Problems and Solutions in Employing People with Disabilities," with the following panelists: Dr. Phil Rumrill, professor and director, Center for Disability Studies, Kent State University; George Cyphers, clinical director of VoCare Inc.; Juanita Greenwood, program director, Vocational Services, Hattie Larlham Community Living; Danielle Martin, regional manager, VocWorks Inc.; and Bob Morgan, supervisor, Ohio Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation.

The panel moderator will be Tom Patton.

Business plan workshop offered

A "How to write a business plan" workshop will be presented April 24 by Mary Ann Jasionowski, Small Business Development Center director, and Mark Hansel from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Community Outreach Partnership Center 560 Allyn St., in Akron.

The most important aspect of a business plan is to serve as a guide during the life of a business.

The workshop will not only teach how to write a business plan, it will show participants the value of having a business plan and keeping it current.
