National College begins fall term / Classes in 23,000-square-foot, $1.6 million campus in Stow scheduled to start Sept. 4August 15, 2007
by Andrea Cole Associate Editor Stow -- With the fall term set to begin, National College staff members are putting the finishing touches on the 23,000-square-foot, $1.6-million campus. To celebrate the beginning of the school year, National College hosted an open house Aug. 10. Director of Communications Chuck Steenburgh said classes will begin Sept. 4 in the Fishcreek Road facility. "We still have some landscaping work to do in the front, but all the renovations inside are complete," he said. Administrative staff in admissions, financial aid and student services have been hired, said Steenburgh. He said there currently are 10 staff members, and more will be added as more students enroll each term. "We expect to have 200 students enrolled," said Steenburgh. "After two or three years, that should increase to 700 to 800 students." The campus initially will offer associate degree programs in the following programs: administrative; business administration in management or accounting; computer applications technology; health information technology; medical assisting; pharmacy technician; surgical technology; and information systems engineering. Greg Shields, regional director of operations for the Ohio and Indiana campuses, said he expects the campus to bring more jobs to the area. "These classes will benefit the individuals who live and work in the community," he said. "Students tend not to relocate. We're excited about being here, and the education prepares students for the workforce so the community can develop. We hope to set our students up with externships with local businesses." Stow Economic Development Coordinator Chuck Wiedie welcomed National College to Stow. "Any time we can get an entity of higher learning, it's a great benefit to the community," he said. "It also will be a benefit to the surrounding businesses, especially the restaurants. From day one, National College officials have said they will look at whatever they can to help students get jobs that are available in Stow." National College will host an open house for area businesses Aug. 29 from 7 to 9 a.m. A continental breakfast will be served.
