Stow -- Work may be done at the Darrow and Graham roads intersection in a couple of years that could help cut down on accidents there.

City Council unanimously approved on Sept. 8 an approximately $91,000 contract for engineering firm Mott MacDonald to do design work on Darrow's southbound right turn lane.

"It's a desirable project for engineering firms," City Engineer Jim McCleary said during Council's finance committee meeting, before the regular meeting.

Brent Kovacs, a spokesperson with the Ohio Department of Transportation's District 4 office in Akron, said Sept. 14 that the project includes removing a traffic island separating the right turn lane from the other southbound lanes where it curves at the intersection and angling the corner to "provide a standard right turn lane."

Kovacs said the project is tentatively scheduled for 2018 and construction, which includes the installation of new traffic signal equipment and inspections, but not the design work, is estimated at about $700,000.

"Until that sells to a contractor, that is subject to change," said Kovacs, adding that up to 90 percent of the construction cost will be paid for with ODOT safety funding and the remainder by the city.

"The city will be responsible for the bidding process and overseeing construction with ODOT just kind of overseeing that state and federal monies are being spent correctly," he said.

McCleary told the Stow Sentry last February that the project is to be done for safety reasons at the high accident intersection.

"It will eliminate side swipes and rear end crashes," he said.

McCleary said Sept. 8 that the city reviewed 11 proposals from engineering firms and Mott MacDonald's was the best for completing the work "in a timely manner."

"The price is very reasonable and the company had already done preliminary work which is why the price is so low," he said.
