Stow Orchestra spring concert set for May 20

Published: May 7, 2017 12:00 AM

The Stow Symphony Orchestra announces its spring concert offering. Under the baton of Music Director Darrell Lee Music, the concert will be performed at the Tallmadge Alliance Church, 1155 East Ave, Tallmadge, on May 20 at 7:30 p.m.

The program will feature G.F. Handel's "Music for the Royal Fireworks" was a wind band suite composed for the fireworks to celebrate the end of the War of the Austrian Succession. Handel re-scored the suite for full orchestra in five movements.

The "Adagietto" from Mahler's 5th Symphony may be Mahler's most famous composition, and is the most frequently performed of his works. It is said to represent Mahler's love song to his wife Alma. It lasts for approximately 10 minutes, and Mahler's instruction is "very slowly."

Antonin Dvorak's "Symphony No. 7 in D Minor, Op. 70". Dvorak resolved that his new symphony would reflect the political struggles of the Czech nation. In doing so the symphony would also reveal something of his personal struggle in reconciling his simple and peaceful countryman's feelings with his intense patriotism and his wish to see the Czech nation flourish. The Dvok specialist John Clapham writes that "without doubt" the 7th "must surely be Dvok's greatest symphony."

Tickets for the upcoming concert, available at the door, are priced at $12 for adults, and $9 for seniors and students. Children under 12 are admitted free.
