The Summit Choral Society's Masterworks Chorale and its children's choirs have several concerts planned for its 27th season.
The Masterworks Chorale, under the direction of Marie Bucoy-Calavan, will open the season Nov. 6 with "The Creation" by Franz Joseph Haydn. Soloists who will be featured are soprano Allie Tyler, tenor Tim Culver and baritone Elijah Blaisdell. The piece will be accompanied by full orchestra. The performance will take place at The First Congregational Church of Akron.
The tradition of the Christmas Candlelight Concerts will continue at the historic St. Bernard Catholic Church. The choirs of the Children's Choir Program will also be performing. This year's featured work will be "Fantasia on Christmas Carols" by Ralph Vaughan Williams.
Then the Masterworks Chorale will collaborate with the Akron Symphony Orchestra and its Chorus for major choral works at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall. In January 2017, both choruses will perform Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. In May 2017, the University of Akron Concert Choir will join both choruses for the "Elijah" by Felix Mendelssohn.
There are two divisions of Summit Choral Society that create the pathway of choral singing. The first is the distinguished Children's Choir Program for children in grades one through twelve. This comprehensive music education program is based on the Kodly method of attaining musical literacy. Children are placed in one of four choirs matched with their own musical experience and skill. There are also five levels of musicianship classes and each singer progresses at his/her own speed and ability. The Children's Choir Program will perform two major concerts in December 2016 with holiday favorites from around the world and May 2017 featuring "Dry Your Tears, Afrika" written by John Williams for the movie "Amistad". This will be conducted by artistic director Marie Bucoy-Calavan with full orchestra.
The Performance Choir, the top choir of the Children's Choir Program, is the only Ohio choir that has been invited to participate in the National Memorial Day Choral Festival in Washington D.C. in May of 2017. The first concert will be the opening event of the John F. Kennedy Centennial Celebration at the Kennedy Center. It will also be broadcast on PBS.
