Two artists will show paintings that depict narratives that suggest that what you see is not always what you get.

In an exhibit at The University of Akron's Emily Davis Gallery Aug. 29 through Sept. 23, "Within Reach" showcases images by Dennis Kardon and Alexi Worth, two artists who are engaged in the intersection of narrative, material, and perception. Within these visual narratives, the ability to connect to the subject of the paintings proves elusive. The relationships depicted suggest multiple meanings and misunderstandings. Kardon and Worth are informed by the contemporary context of self-reflection, technology, and cinema.

Dennis Kardon holds a B.A. from Yale. He has shown extensively in New York City and throughout the world. NYC exhibitions include the Drawing Center, Barbara Toll Fine Art, Mitchell Algus Gallery and the Jewish Museum. Kardon has received a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation grant, a Milton Avery fellowship to Yaddo artist colony, and a John Simon Memorial Guggenheim Fellowship. Kardon's own writing and art reviews have been featured in Art in America, Artcritical.com, Artnet.com, Hyperallergic.com and The Brooklyn Rail. His work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Brooklyn Museum among many others. He currently teaches at the School of Visual Arts in New York.

Alexi Worth attended Yale University (BA 1986) and Boston University (MFA 1993). He has had solo exhibitions with the Elizabeth Harris, Bill Maynes, and DC Moore galleries, among others. He has received awards from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Tiffany Foundation, and the New England Foundation for the Arts. In addition to his painting, Worth has written about art for The New Yorker, Artforum, T magazine, Art in America, ARTnews, Slate, and other magazines. Worth has taught at various BFA and MFA programs, including the University of Pennsylvania and the Yale School of Art.
