SMFHS seniors experience nation's capital 'Close Up'

Senior students from the Stow-Munroe Falls City School District recently traveled to Washington D.C. for a field trip on April 2-7, 2017. The annual trip offered students an experience to compliment what they have learned in the classroom throughout the school year. The trip was coordinated as part of the Close Up program.

The Close Up program is designed to give high school students and educators an inside look at democracy. Using the nation's capital as a living classroom, students got a close up view of government -- interacting with the people, processes and places that are unique to the federal government.

"The students saw our government in action," said Trina Poole, teacher of AP US government and politics, American Government and Close Up adviser. "During the trip, students had the opportunity to meet with our representatives and senators. We also attended a committee hearing and a performance at the Kennedy Center. It was an amazing experience."

Students toured Washington's monuments and memorials, visited the halls of Congress and sat front row in meetings with Washington insiders and the media. Students also took part in activities, discussions and debates to reinforce what they learned and experienced throughout the day.

"We are thrilled to be able to offer such an engaging experience for our students," said Superintendent Tom Bratten. "This trip allowed students to take what they have been learning about all year and to meet people and engage in the political process. They are not simply learning about democracy, they are living and becoming active participants in democracy."
