Firefighter Sandy, a well-known figure throughout the community for her work in the Stow-Munroe Falls City School District, has been honored as Ohio's Fire Safety Educator of the Year for 2016. On Nov. 14, third-grade students at Woodland Elementary School honored her achievement with a "congratulations" banner signed by all students and staff.

"I am so honored to have received this award, and this banner. I plan to hang it in the hall in the Stow Fire Department," Firefighter Sandy Ray said. "Thank you very much to all the wonderful students and staff at Woodland Elementary School. I couldn't do my job without you."

Firefighter Sandy has been teaching local children and families about fire safety for more than 25 years. She frequently gives presentations in schools and classrooms and emphasizes fire prevention.

"Every student in school knows Firefighter Sandy when they see her," said Woodland Principal Mary Lou Muckleroy. "It's important for our students to have figures in the community who they look up to, and it is particularly important for them to feel safe approaching safety personnel. Firefighter Sandy provides a true service to our school and our students, and we congratulate her on this award! To us, she is always the Fire Safety Educator of the Year."
