Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary is a 501c3 non-profit organization that provides rescue, rehabilitation and recovery programs for abused, neglected and abandoned farm animals. The sanctuary was founded in 2000 and has served Ohio and the surrounding states for the past 14 years. The intake criteria is that the animal has to be removed from its situation by a humane officer, sheriff's department or other law enforcement official, and that cruelty charges are filed against the owner.°After the court case is completed and the animals are signed over to Happy Trails, there is an adoption program and animals are adopted out as pets to families across the United States.
Outreach programs include: Happy Trails Amish Horse Retirement Program for buggy and plow horses who can no longer serve their Amish families; the Farm Animal Visitation Program where volunteers take rescued farm animals into nursing homes to visit residents; and Happy Trails offers many animal educational programs for both kids and adults.
Types of abuse addressed by Happy Trails includes hoarding, abandonment, cockfighting, direct and intentional abuse, animals in the food production system, starvation cases, and much more.
